Job Description

SASRI, a division of the South African Sugar Association is seeking a highly qualified Senior Sugarcane Physiologist with a PhD in Plant Physiology, Agronomyor a related field, based in Mount Edgeccombe.

This role would lead innovative research in sugarcane physiology with focus on chemical ripening and other methods (e.g. drying off) of cane quality management; and the assessment (e.g. with remote sensing technologies) of sugarcane quality for enabling informed ripening and harvest decision-making.

The incumbent will also participate in research leading to sustainable sugarcane management practices for improved resource use efficiency and resilience to abiotic stress. This role requires independent research leadership, strong project management, and stakeholder engagement to ensure effective knowledge exchange with the industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage research projects on sugarcane physiology, with focus on chemical ripening and other methods of cane quality management and monitoring.
  • Develop and apply remote sensing and modeling techniques for monitoring crop performance and cane quality.
  • Engage with industry stakeholders, including growers, millers, and extension specialists, to translate research findings into practical applications through participatory research and effective communication.
  • Provide specialist advisory services and contribute to the development of best practices in sugarcane cultivation.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at local and international conferences.
  • Mentor junior researchers, postgraduate students, and interns, fostering scientific excellence.
  • Oversee project budgets, resource allocation, and compliance with industry regulations.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • PhD in Plant Physiology, Agronomy, Crop Science, or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in crop physiology research, field trials, and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage research projects independently, including budget oversight.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills for effective knowledge exchange.
  • Proficiency in crop modeling, remote sensing, and data analytics is an advantage.
  • A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • SACNASP registration or eligibility for professional accreditation.
  • Particiaption in other discipline affiliated bodies will be advantageous.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel extensively for field research and grower engagements.
